In February 2019 we launched out 425 Bursary Appeal. This was an ambitious initiative to create a Restricted Fund that would permanently endow a 425 Bursary for a pupil right through the College: from their first day at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall until their Rhetoric Leavers’ Mass at the College.
A 425 Bursary Committee was formed to assist this endeavour by hosting a Bursary Ball which was held at Stanley House Hotel and Spa in Mellor on the 18th of May 2019. Over 170 guests enjoyed this event with dinner and dancing and helped to raise over £70,000 on the night, which has gone towards the 425 Bursary Appeal.
Mary Flanagan (OS ’14) patron of the appeal, spoke movingly about the transformational effect that receiving a Stonyhurst Bursary had on her life. She explained how this investment in her as a child taught her to greatly value education and to make the most of every opportunity offered to her. Mary continues to live by this, embodying the Jesuit values of ‘men and women for others’.
She finished her speech with the words:
‘… and if you want to see a deserving child set the world on fire, give them the opportunity of a bursary; give them the opportunity of a purposeful, well-rounded education. Give them the opportunity to join the Stonyhurst family, and watch them go.’
